Working a forest in flat light

Overcast days are the best days in the woods. No blown highlights, no harsh shadow, and colour that finally behaves.

Waterfall running through a dense green forest

Sunshine ruins a forest. It punches holes through the canopy and leaves you with white patches and black gaps in the same frame. An overcast morning turns the whole sky into one enormous softbox.

Slow the shutter down

With the light this even you can drop the shutter and let moving water smooth out without losing the texture in the rock and moss around it. A tripod and a little patience do more here than any filter.

I also keep the frame tighter than instinct suggests. A forest is chaotic, and a photograph of all of it is a photograph of nothing.

Find one thing worth looking at, then remove everything that argues with it.
