Finding lines in a city you have never visited

A day to walk, a day to photograph. How I read an unfamiliar city and turn its architecture into something graphic.

Modern city architecture photographed against a vivid blue sky

The first day in a new city I leave the camera in the bag on purpose. Walking without it means I actually see the place instead of collecting frames I will delete later.

Look up, then look again

Street level is crowded and tells you very little. One floor up, the repetition begins: balconies, window bays, the diagonal a staircase cuts across a facade. That is where a city becomes graphic.

Clear blue works in my favour here. A plain sky becomes a flat background, and the building reads as pure shape and colour against it.

Architecture will give you a strong frame on any day. You just have to stand in the right place.
